Heating and Cooling Filters
April 1, 2014
Have you noticed your heat or AC not running as efficient as it could be?
Have you noticed excessive dust in the air?
Experiencing coughing, wheezing, or asthma attacks?
This could all be due to a dirty filter. HVAC Systems and Wall Units all have a filter to help clean the air circulating through your apartment when the unit is running. When these filters become extremely dirty, the air circulating back into your home is also dirty. This will also cause the unit to not produce as much heating or cooling as you might expect.
This is what an HVAC filter can look like if not changed according to the guidelines. Imagine all of that gunk going back into the air you breathe everyday!
The general guideline we follow is to have your HVAC System filter changed at least every 6 months. Once before heating season and once before cooling season. You can contact your Property Manager to have this done. If you have a Wall Unit, you can easily pull out and clean your filter under running water, let it dry, then put it back in. We recommend this every 3 to 4 months in order to maintain maximum efficiency. As an added bonus, you might reduce your heating/cooling costs if the unit is running better!
All of the following can affect the cleanliness of your filter:
- Pets
- Cigarette smoke
- Remodeling/woodworking in home
- Continuous fan operation
- Vacuuming
- Cooking
- Burning candles
