Simple Ways To Stay Healthy During The Winter
January 13, 2020

Winter can be such an easy excuse to hibernate, lack exercise, and eat comfort foods. It’s cold and snowy outside, why would anyone want to leave their cozy home? Today we’re chatting about some simple ways to stay healthy and active this winter. It may not seem like it but summer will be here in a just a few months!
Take the Stairs! Live in an apartment on the third floor? SKIP the elevator and take the stairs instead. Have your dog with you? Try to race them up the stairs to get your heart rate up for a minute. By cutting out the elevator and taking the stairs just 4-5 times a day, it is proven that you have more energy and digest your meals better during the day.
Drink Water Drink plenty of water during the day. Make sure to drink at least 10-12 oz of water before every meal, and continue to hydrate during the day.
Try Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is done in intervals of eating and fasting. Following the 16/8 method: you eat for 8 hours during the day, and fast for the other 16. You can also do the 6/18 or 4/20 method. For example: some may use the 16/8 and eat their first meal at 11am. Prior to 11am, you can have coffee, tea or water – it is said that 50 calories or less does not break your fast. You should be finished with your dinner by 7pm, and only drink water the rest of the evening. Intermittent fasting has been proven to improve brain activity and memory, add life longevity and increases energy in your day to day life.
Workout It can be tough to make the trip to the gym after work, so stop by your apartment’s 24/7 fitness center. All the McKenzie Apartments have 24/7 fitness centers that tenants can utilize. Whether you want to workout at 6am before work, at your lunch break, or after work – it’s easy to just walk to the clubhouse and get your sweat on!
Plan Out Your Food Tracking your meals and calorie intake is the best way to learn about portion control. A fitness app that is extremely popular for this is My Fitness Pal. You can modify your weight loss goals, track your daily food, add your fitness workouts, and even enter your water intake. Whether you want to lose, gain, or maintain – this app is fantastic, and you can tailor it exactly fit your needs.
Try New Fitness Classes Sick of the same type of cardio routine? Many gyms and fitness centers offer free classes and week passes. Want to take some yoga classes, or just do a fun dance class with a friend after work? This is the perfect way to try before you buy a pass!
Go Outside Work in a cubicle all day? Make sure you get up every hour to do a power walk around the office. Fill up your water jug, use the restroom, or grab a coffee – you’ll feel refreshed after just a 5-minute break.
Keep Small Snacks Around For Hunger If you’re like me, you get a small snack craving around 3pm. It’s almost the end of the workday, but dinner is a few hours off – make sure to have small healthy snacks to grab so you don’t go for junk food. Ex: Apple. Mixed Nuts. Piece of cheese. Those are all perfect snacks when you’re needing a boost to get you until dinner.
